Starts at 9:30 am (Central time)
George William Heil, known to everyone as Bill, passed away on October 6, 2026, at his home in Grosse Ile, Michigan. He was 84 years old.
Born on February 4, 1942, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Bill went on to earn a BA from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Wayne State University. He built a life rooted in service and care for the people around him. Always wanting to be helpful, and never shy about looking out for everyone's safety, Bill had a way of making those near him feel looked after.
He gave generously of his time to his community. Bill was a longtime member of Rotary, lent his hands to the community gardens, and in 2024 was elected a Trustee to the Grosse Ile Township Board, a role he took on with pride.
Bill loved animals dearly. He found real joy in brushing and feeding the family horse, Sunshine, and he looked forward to a good game of Udogg on Sundays. Watching Nascar was one of his pastimes. He was especially happy in his second marriage, warmly embraced by a family who loved him right back.
Bill is survived by his wife, Dr. Marj Field; his daughter, Dr. Leslie Hueschen; his son, Chris Field; and his sisters, Peggy Amendt and Karen Baird.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 10:30 am at St. James Episcopal Church in Grosse Ile. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bill Heil's name to T.A.I.L.s, a cat rescue on Grosse Ile.
Bill was deeply respected and cared for in his community, and he will be greatly missed.
His graveside service with military rites by Paul McVey V.F.W. Post #1592 and its’ auxiliary and Charleston American Legion Post #93 will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2026 at Liberty Cemetery, rural Charleston. Arrangements: Harper-Swickard Funeral Home.
