Donald Sager

CHARLESTON – Donald Wayne Sager, 82, of Charleston, passed away Friday, May 11, 2018 at Mattoon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home, with his graveside funeral to immediately follow at Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston, with Pastor Curt Weaver officiating.  Memorials may be given to Lincolnland Hospice.

Donald was born December 21, 1935 at Sullivan, Illinois son of Dallas "Glenn" and Laverne (Chaney) Sager.  He was united in marriage to Marylin (Shonk) Shafer, September 30, 1978 at the East Harrison Street Church of God; she survives.  They would have had their 40 th anniversary in September.  Their marriage created a family with six children.  Surviving are their children: Lynda Sager Clapp and husband Bruce of Westfield, IN, Eric W. Sager and wife Marcy of Charleston, Richard Shafer and wife Laura Saelinger-Shafer of Elmhurst, IL, Debbie Shafer Simpson and husband Jay of Charleston, Tina Shafer Butler and husband Eric of Oakland; daughter-in-law: Vicki Hutchcraft of Vandalia, IL; brother; Richard Sager and wife Joanne of LaPorte, IN; and sister: Rose Marie Evans of Quincy, IL; Fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.  He was preceded in death by his parents, son: David A. Hutchcraft, brothers: James and Melvin; sisters: Marilyn and Norma Jean; two grandchildren: Chase Kustowski and Michael L. Ballard; and one great-grandchild: Paightin Simpson.

Don was welder by trade.  He started at Progress Industries in Arthur, and later retired from Trailmobile in Charleston, after 27 years of service.  In retirement, he drove for Mooney Motors of Charleston.  He was a U.S. Army veteran.  Don absolutely loved old cars.  He enjoyed yard work on the John Deere, gardening, and going out to eat in many restaurants in the area.  Don and Marylin were constant companions, and were considered regulars at Lincoln Garden, What's Cookin', McDonald's, Moonshine, Yoder's and Niemerg's.  They were always on the go.  He also liked fixing hamburgers on the grill.  Being a car guy, he loved to trade cars, always on the lookout for a good deal.  Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends.
