CHARLESTON – Donald Eugene Spence, 87, of Charleston, went to his Heavenly home Sunday, April 26, 2020 at Brookstone Estates of Charleston.
His graveside memorial service will be private. Arrangements: Harper-Swickard. Memorials: Old State Road Christian Church.
Don was born May 18, 1932 in rural Charleston, son of Bert G. and Dorothy (Trotter) Spence. He married Velma Joanne Jenkins, June 10, 1951 at the Lerna United Methodist Church. She preceded him into Heaven, November 10, 2018. He is survived by their children: Debra Creech of SC, Mark (Kathy) Spence of Charleston, Donald "D.B." (Marsha) Spence of Mattoon, and Dan (Patty) Spence of Charleston; Grandchildren: Spencer Wilcox, Josh Wilcox, Michelle Sanders, Holly Misener, Emily Phipps, Zeke Spence, Caleb Spence, Jamie Forsythe, Lisa McKelvey, Heather Drake, Travis Spence, Zac Trelz, Madison Bays, and Wade Spence. 28 great-grandchildren as well as one sister: Virginia Lee Foreman; and four sisters-in-law: Norma Spence, Jessie Snyder, Hilda Alms and Sue Jenkins, also survive. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Bill Spence, Bert Ray Spence, Jim Spence, and Pat Spence, and a son-in-law: Bobby Creech.
Don retired from USI after thirty-seven years of service. He was a member of Old State Road Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Charleston Masonic Lodge #35. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed working his garden and sharing his produce, and loved going deer hunting in South Carolina, while visiting his daughter. Don treasured time he was able to spend with his family, especially his grandchildren.
