Joan Atwell

LERNA – Joan Atwell, 89, of Lerna, passed away Friday, September 14, 2018 at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, Mattoon.

The funeral service honoring her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Pleasant Prairie Indian Cemetery, rural Lerna.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army or the Lerna Lions Club.

Joan was born January 2, 1929 in Shelby County, Illinois, daughter of Floyd and Geneva (Duddleston) Bowman.  She was united in marriage to John Robert Atwell, July 31, 1949 at the Mattoon Presbyterian Church: he preceded her in death June 22, 2013.  She is survived by their children: Barbara Westerdale and fiancé Dave Kubeczko of Aurora, CO, Robert Atwell and fiancée Pam Mitchell of Lerna, and Shirley Dean and husband Mike of Madisonville, KY.  Four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters also survive.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister: Marjorie Moyer.

Joan was a member of the former Shiloh Presbyterian Church and the Lerna Lions Club.  She enjoyed gardening and traveling, but most of all she loved taking care of her family.
