Obituary

Peggy Buchanan

CHARLESTON – Peggy Jean Buchanan, 92, of Charleston, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2024 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Her funeral will be Friday, July 26, 2024 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home at 12:00 p.m.  Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Kansas.  Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Peggy was born January 22, 1932 at Bluford, Illinois, daughter of Helen (Green) and Charles Belmont, Jr.  She married Aaron Leslie Buchanan, August 7, 1948.  He preceded her into Heaven, March 22, 2009.  She is survived by their children, Nancy Brummett of Arcola, Denise Fudge and husband William Harold of Kansas,

Janet Kerr and husband Dave of Olney, Aaron C. Buchanan of Charleston,

Steve Buchanan and wife Donna of Charles City, IA, and Shelley Gale and husband Scott of Paris, IL; Grandchildren, Kimberly Wilson (Jim Hite), Ron Lee and wife Jodie, Lydia Morris and husband Bryan, Shane Buchanan and wife Natosha, Nicole Buchanan, Zachary Buchanan and wife Brandi, Stevonna Buchanan (Darrell Price),

Ryan Buchanan and wife Meghan, and Charles Hildebrand (Sidney Harris).

Seventeen great-grandchildren (with another on the way), one great-great-granddaughter, Annabelle Buchanan, and one sister, Cindy Clendenen and husband Cory of Mattoon.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Donna Solomon, four brothers, Tommy Belmont, David Belmont, Sonny Belmont, and Billy Belmont, and two sons-in-law, Max Lee and Rogers Butts.

Peggy was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.  She retired from the Charleston School District, where she had served as a cook for many years.  Peggy was a Blue Star Mom for the Charleston Schools.

Peggy was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed country music.  If you looked in the dictionary for the definition of MOM, you likely would have found a picture of Peggy.  She not only looked after and loved her own children, but she had love in her heart for all the neighborhood children, and all the students she came into contact with at school.
