CHARLESTON – Raymond Leroy “Roy” Cuppy, 89, of Charleston, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2026 at Hilltop Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, with his family at his side
Roy was born September 7, 1936 at Charleston, son of Charles Raymond and Ida L. (Brown) Cuppy. He married Peggy Ann Calhoun December 29, 1954 at Charleston; she survives. Also surviving are their children, Mindy Bell and husband Pat of Oakland and Margie Schmitt and husband Terry of Charleston; grandchildren, Christopher Bell of Oakland, Craig Bell of Brocton, Corey Bell of Charleston, and Carly Schmitt of Terre Haute, IN; nine great-grandchildren, and one sister, Connie Heuer of Perryville, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Larry Cuppy.
Roy had been an officer with the Charleston Police Department, a master carpenter, owned and operated Cuppy’s Phillips 66 Station, and retired at the age of 80 as Plant Manager at CCAR Industries, after forty -six years. He had attended the Ashmore Presbyterian Church, and been a member of the Charleston Masonic Lodge and The Mayflower Society. Roy and Peggy would take off on one of his motorcycles and travel all over the country. They had enjoyed a cruise they had taken to Alaska.
Roy had been able to trace his roots back to many of the pioneer families of Hutton Township, Coles County, Illinois into the 1820’s. Parker, Doty, Walker, Stewart, Brown, Glassco, Veach, and Cartwright, to name a few.
A private graveside service is planned. Arrangements: Harper-Swickard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor may be made to the Coles County Genealogical Society.
