Obituary

Ruby Shafer

CHARLESTON – Ruby Shafer, 92, of Charleston, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2018 at her home.

Her memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 2018 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Burial of ashes will be at a later date.  If you are unable to attend the service, and would like to stop by and express your condolences to Bill, he is currently a resident at Hilltop, and loves to have company.  In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the Charleston Food Pantry.

Ruby was born May 16, 1926 in Coles County, Illinois, daughter of Samuel and Oda (Hall) Smith.  She was united in marriage to Bill Shafer, May 2, 1946 at Ft. Devens, MA.  They were blessed with 72 years of marriage.  She is also survived by their daughter: Cheryl Robison of Charleston; three grandchildren: Lori (Doug) Livingston of Lerna, Allen R. (Michelle) Robison of Sarasota, FL, and Ryan Mack Shafer of Charleston; three great-grandchildren: Ava Robison, Garrett Livingston, and Riley Shafer; and three sisters: Shirley Schwartz of Franklin, TN, Lucille (Walt) McKenzie of Mattoon, and Patty Adams of Robertsdale, AL.  several nieces and nephews also survive.  She was preceded in death by a son: Mack Linder Shafer; two brothers: Edgar Smith and Lloyd Smith; and one sister: Berdina Myrick.

Ruby had two green thumbs.  She loved working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and keeping her yard immaculate.  Ruby was also an excellent cook, with the unique ability to turn a few simple ingredients into a delicious meal.  When she heard about someone being sick, she was known to take entire meals, including her scrumptious pies, to them so they would have plenty to tide them over. She also loved to crochet, and in earlier years would sew matching outfits for herself and Cheryl.  Ruby always enjoyed having a dog around their home and thought of them like another family member.
