Obituary

Silas Brewer

CHARLESTON - Silas Mitchell Brewer, 84, of rural Charleston, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his family.

The funeral service honoring his life will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2026 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home. Burial with military rites performed by Paul McVey V.F.W. Post #1592 and it’s Auxiliary, and Charleston American Legion Post #93 will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Silas was born May 17, 1942 at Charleston, son of Wayne and Sarah (Hargis) Brewer. He married Debra Gale Strange, June 8, 1984 at the Charleston Church of the Nazarene. He is survived by their children, John Wayne Brewer and fiancée Pam Lewsader of Charleston, Jaymie Mitchell of Columbus, OH, and Kathleen Jones and husband Wayne of Mattoon; Grandchildren, Dustin Brewer and wife Ariel, Nicole Holt, Stephanie Carlsten and husband Stephen, Matthew Mitchell, Nicholas Mitchell and significant other Arvella Taborn, Estin Jones, and Shaedon McCullough; Great-grandchildren, Silas Wayne Brewer, Crystal Brewer, Sara Brewer, Addie Holt, Corey Gregor, Alexis Brewer, and Azonnia Mitchell; a brother, John Brewer and wife Carol of Findlay, IL, and a sister, Mary Wilson of Paris, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Silas was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, working as a diesel mechanic stationed in Paris, France. He retired from Vesuvius. Silas was a gifted mechanic, being able to fix anything on wheels. He especially liked working on classic cars, riding motorcycles, and going to the drag races.
