Sue Hanft

CHARLESTON – Sue Hanft, 85, of Charleston, passed away Monday, August 26, 2024 at Hilltop Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Her funeral will be held at 12:00 p.m. (NOON) Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home, with Pastor Jared von Kamp officiating.  Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston.  Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.  Memorials in her honor may be made to: Christ First Church, The American Cancer Society, or the Coles County Animal Shelter.

Sue was born January 13, 1939 at Charleston, daughter of Max M. and Margaret (Garner) Smith.  She married Rod E. Hanft, August 29, 1964.  He passed away February 16, 2003.  She is survived by their daughter, Rachael Mokszycki and husband Mark of Snohomish, WA; a step-daughter, Karen Melton of San Dimas, CA; step-daughter-in-law, Catherine Sarad of Evansville, IN; six grandchildren, Ryan Grace Mokszycki, Erin May Mokszycki, Brett Alan Mokszycki, Rodney Melton, Shane Melton, and Josh Hanft and wife Jessica; and one great-grandchild, Jolie Hanft.  She was preceded in death by her father, Max M. Smith, step-father, Lloyd Smith, mother, Margaret Smith, brother, Freddie Smith, and two step-sons, Mike and Kirk.

Sue was a devoted member of Christ First Church, Charleston.  She had worked alongside her husband Rod at their jewelry store on the square for many years.  Sue had been a long-time member of the former Zonta Club of Charleston and participated in the Christian Women's Luncheon group.  She loved knitting, crocheting, counted cross-stitch, and working with plastic canvas.  Sue was a club leader for the Starlites 4-H Club.
