Obituary

Susan Carol (Boden) Adams Finley

CHARLESTON - With profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of Susan Carol (Boden) Adams Finley, age 74, on November 4th, 2024. Born on January 26, 1950, in Tampa, Florida, Susan leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and faith that will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Adopted by Thurmond and Gladys Adams, Susan and her twin brother, Wendell Adams, were raised with a blend of Southern grace and boldness. She grew up loving all things pink and girly but never shied away from learning the skills of the strong and self-sufficient. From an early age, she was a spirited soul, embracing life's adventures with her characteristic zest.

In high school, Susan was a avid sports fan who caught the eye of the school's football star, John Robert Finley. Their love blossomed, leading to a beautiful marriage in 1970. Just this year, they celebrated 54 remarkable years of love, friendship, and unwavering commitment. Together, they raised two children, Kimberly Sue and John Paul, who reside in Phoenix, Arizona.

In 1979, Susan made history as the second-ever female Deputy Sheriff in Illinois, breaking barriers and setting a pioneering path for women in law enforcement. Known for her dedication to justice, her courage, and her unyielding faith, she often said, "God is my Backup," a sentiment that guided her through every challenge. Susan continued her career with the Mattoon Police Department before being appointed to the Illinois Prison Review Board by the Governor, a role she took with honor, retiring as an Officer.

Her dedication didn't end with law enforcement. A natural entrepreneur, she owned and operated two retail stores, Shoe Impressions and then SueLynn's Fashion Showcase, further establishing herself as a pillar of her community. She was also a committed precinct committee woman, active in politics on both a local and national scale, with a network of influence and friendships that spanned far and wide.

After retirement, Susan and John embarked on a new adventure, exploring the country in their travel trailer, relishing in the beauty of beaches, nature, and the fellowship of faith. As a two- time stage IV cancer survivor, Susan's resilience was unmatched, and her strength a source of inspiration for all.

Preceding Susan in death are her parents, Thurmond and Gladys Adams, and her father's second wife, Geraldine Adams Hoff, whom Susan lovingly called "Mom." And cared for her till her passing. She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, John Finley; her children, Kimberly Sue and John Paul; her twin brother, Wendell Adams; and a vast network of family, friends, and admirers who cherished her dearly.

As we say goodbye, we find comfort in knowing she is welcomed by our Lord with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Susan was a remarkable woman—a loving wife, mother, public servant, entrepreneur, and friend. Her legacy of love, service, and faith will live on in the hearts she touched.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the National Police Foundation, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, or Concerns of Police Survivors. Susan's light will be deeply missed, but her spirit, strength, and love will remain a guiding force for us all.

Her graveside funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 15, 2024 at Mound Cemetery, Charleston, Illinois.  Arrangements: Harper-Swickard Funeral Home.
