Dale McMillan
CHARLESTON – Dale Richard McMillan, 89, of Charleston, passed on to his Heavenly home Monday May 20, 2019 at his home with his family at his side.
Dale was born September 4, 1929. He was a lifelong resident of Charleston. He was the son of Glenn E. and Ethel J. (Jodry) McMillan. He married Barbara Gay Sager, July 25, 1953 at the Coles County Courthouse; she survives. Also surviving are their daughters: Sherry Lee (McMillan) Hawk of Mt. Pleasant, PA and Leesa Kay (McMillan) Kern and husband Mike of Kansas; grandchildren: James Anthony Hawk of Jacksonville, FL, Christopher Dale Hawk of Mt. Pleasant, PA, Evin Ashley Bennett of Champaign, and Ryan Dale Bennett and wife Madelyn Wdowicki of Mahomet. One brother: Larry McMillan of St. Petersburg, FL, as well as his former son-in-law: Ross Bennett, and beloved brother-in-law: Robert Sager also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dale was a veteran of the Korean War, serving on the U.S.S. Leo. He worked for 32 years at Blaw-Knox. Dale was a founding member of Central Christian Church in Charleston. Despite unimaginable odds as a child, Dale always took the high road to meet each challenge and became a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
He loved his children and grandchildren unconditionally, and would light up a room with his humor and humanity to all. Dale accepted people as they were and never met a stranger. He was also known to bring home every stray dog he found.
Dale and Barb’s love story was an inspiration to all that knew them. They were inseparable, and even planned their retirements to start on the same day. They enjoyed spending time outside, traveling, and riding their Harley.
The family would like to thank SBLHC Lincolnland Hospice team, who made it possible for Dale to pass on his own terms, with peace and comfort, surrounded by his loved ones. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to SBLHC Lincolnland Hospice.
A private memorial will be held at a later date. Arrangements: Harper-Swickard.
