CHARLESTON - John Albert Herman, “Big Bad John”, age 93, of Charleston, passed away on June 26, 2019 at Hilltop Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

 

His graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2019 at Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston.  Military rites will be performed by Paul McVey V.F.W. Post #1592 and the Charleston American Legion.  In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation.  Memorials in his honor may be made to the Charleston Food Pantry.  Arrangements: Harper-Swickard.

 

John was born January 8, 1926 in Charleston, the youngest, and last surviving child of Charles and Martha (Stoner) Herman.  He married Evelyn Jasper, December 20, 2004 in Charleston.  She predeceased him on September 1, 2011.

 

John honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy from June 1944 to May 1946 during WWII.  After military service, he went to work in the Laborers and construction industry, and was the oldest living member of Laborers International Union of North America.  He served 72 years and was proud of this achievement. 

 

John is survived by nieces and nephews: Pat Hill, Joy Cook, Carolyn Kolling, Judy Barding, and Glen Donley, all of Charleston, Paul Donley, Bob Ohm, and Martha Misenheimer of Mattoon, and Randy Childress of Gays.  He was predeceased by his wife, parents, sisters: Florence Armstrong, Doris Childress, Merle Ohm, and May Myers, and brothers: Kenneth and Bill Herman.

 

John was a lifetime member of Charleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1592, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 803, AARP, AFSCME Retirees #89, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
