Marylin Sager Obituary

Marylin Sager

CHARLESTON – Marylin Genevieve Sager, 79, of Charleston, passed away Monday, June 11, 2018 at Life’s Journey of Mattoon.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Harper-Swickard Funeral Home, with her funeral to immediately follow at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Curt Weaver officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to Life’s Journey Activity Fund or East Harrison Street Church of God.

Marylin was born January 23, 1939 at Kansas, Illinois, daughter of Everrett and Vina (Staggs) Shonk.  She was united in marriage to Donald Wayne Sager, September 30, 1978 at the East Harrison Street Church of God; he preceded her in death May 11, 2018.  They would have had their 40th anniversary in September.  Their marriage created a family with six children.  Surviving are their children: Richard Shafer and wife Laura Saelinger-Shafer of Elmhurst, IL, Debbie Shafer Simpson and husband Jay of Charleston, Tina Shafer Butler and husband Eric of Oakland, Lynda Sager Clapp and husband Bruce of Westfield, IN, and Eric W. Sager and wife Marcy of Charleston; daughter-in-law: Vicki Hutchcraft of Vandalia.

Fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.  She was preceded in death by her father: Everrett Shonk (when she was about 8 months old), mother and step-father: Vina and Russell Burger; the father of her children: William Shafer; step-son: David A. Hutchcraft; brothers: Raymond, James, Morris, Robert, and Hughes Shonk; one sister: Alice Perry; two grandchildren: Chase Kustowski and Michael L. Ballard; and one great-grandchild: Paightin Simpson.

Marylin was a devoted homemaker, and later went to work as a Cashier, and had been Service Manager at Eisner/Jewel, Wilb Walker’s, and County Market.  Marylin is still remembered by her customers, many years after retirement, for her genuine smile and friendly greeting when they came to the store.  She enjoyed sewing and had attended cosmetology school.  Marylin and Don were constant companions, and were considered regulars at Lincoln Garden, What’s Cookin’, McDonald’s, Moonshine, Yoder’s and Niemerg’s.  They were always on the go.
